Bring Down Don't Ask, Don't (How To Terminate An Employee) Tell
In the employee written notice you are essentially outlining any reasons you might, in the future, decide to sack. Follow-up any commitments you made in the firing meeting including writing a notice of recommendation (if asked for). In addition, cutting back an employee's hours which, in turn, forces him to resign to find more hours is an involuntary termination. A well done notification speaks volumes about your sense of justice and professionalism.
Worker disobedience causes many problems in the workplace, but doesn't have to hurt a business. Simply citing your worker with a notice of reprimand may upgrade your worker's work productivity, but often it won't have a lasting effect. Rarely is a worker ever sacked on the spot unless that individual is a threat to the safety of other workforce or involved in criminal activity. Does the layoff fit with precedent? If you must layoff someone for an unlawful reason or a stupid one, then follow the method for high-risk terminations. In particular, for productivity problems and minor misbehavior, written warnings serve as notice of the standards and your directives. In an ideal world, everyone in the firm community would benefit from giving and receiving references. If you lay off a worker for "cause," a clear, well-written statement of the reasons for the layoff will inhibit any future litigation by the employee. And if you're a manager and not a business owner, make sure you have your supervisor on board during the whole procedure.
